2023 – 2024 School Year

September 2023 – May 2024

LEARN. DANCE. GROW.

The joy of Kathak begins with Level 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B at the School of Katha Dance Theatre. We introduce young children to the fundamentals of classical Kathak focusing on proper body alignment, basic Kathak technique and terminology, and musicality. As part of the KDT family, your child will learn much more than Kathak. Exposure to dance reinforces important life skills like creativity, discipline, and team participation—all in a safe, fun, and nurturing environment. These are the formative years, where a student learns and applies the basic concept of classical Kathak technique to their dancing. We expect all new students ages 6 onward and new youth & adults to be interested in learning Kathak, have a natural ear for music, want to work hard and be able to apply instructions and corrections into their work.

LEVEL PROGRESSION

Generally, a new student is admitted into the beginning level of Kathak training. In Kathak there are 3 Gharanas, or schools of dance. At Katha Dance Theatre we follow Lucknow Gharana. Often new students come with past experience in a different gharana, which requires an audition to place them in a class based on their level of technical training and ability. A student may spend one or two years at each of the beginner levels until they are ready to move up to Intermediate levels (3A, 3B and 4A) and later to advanced levels (4B, Intermediate and Advanced). Teachers’ annual assessments of the students’ progress will determine the students’ placements the following school year.

WHAT DOES KDT LOOK FOR IN AN APPRENTICE?

School Director Rita Mustaphi is looking for advanced-level Kathak students who are talented, passionate about the art form and motivated to pursue intense training, and ready to take the next step toward being a professional dancer. To learn more about this and other FAQ’s, visit this page.
