Saraswati Puja & Basant Panchami

Religion, culture, and art merge to honor the goddess of art and learning, while welcoming the first day of spring!

Indian art is inseparable from its culture and religions. Many first generation Asian Indians, including KDT’s Artistic Director Rita Mustaphi, fondly remember participating as students in the festival of Saraswati Puja and Basant Panchami in India. Everyone dressed in yellow, the color which symbolizes Basanti, the spring season. Guided by teachers and parents, the celebration was ultimately organized and performed by students.

In this tradition, KDT along with the Hindu Society of Minnesota present a cultural celebration of Saraswati Puja and Basant Panchami. Started in 1990 Saraswati Puja and Basant Panchami is an annual event for Katha Dance Theatre. It features a religious ceremony and various folk art works and celebration through dance and music. Through this cultural festival KDT opens its doors to the community to celebrate together.
