About Katha Dance Theatre

Founded in 1987 by Artistic Director Rita Mustaphi, Katha Dance Theatre (KDT) is rooted in classical Kathak dance of north India. The Katha Dance Theatre Company and School promotes traditional Kathak and extends its boundaries with creative innovation. KDT performances are designed to educate with an emphasis on access, community, and audience development. The theatre’s repertoires embrace interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary productions as well as the collaboration of dance and live theater while including contemporary socially relevant themes.

KDT produces shows that reflect multi-cultural experiences within the community as well as shows that are cross-cultural. It is the interdisciplinary, percussive dance of Kathak along with storytelling, poetry, mime, and theater that makes it a dynamic multimedia—vibrantly sensual, powerful, and pulsating in nature. KDT is the only organization of its kind, size, and scope in the Midwest United States keeping alive the tradition of Kathak and expanding upon its forms. KDT offers fully staged performances, school performances, lecture demonstrations, and interactive workshops. The KDT dance school offers comprehensive training with on-going adult, teen, and childrens classes and performance opportunities. KDT creates dance that moves you!
